Serving our community by protecting all

Chief LeavittPolice Chief, David Leavitt

Email Chief Leavitt, dleavitt@bbcpublicsafety.us

Chief Leavitt first became involved with public service by serving as a volunteer firefighter in Western New York in the late 1980’s. In 1990, he began working for the local ambulance service in Niagara Falls as a dispatcher and eventually an EMT working on the ambulance.

In 1992, Chief Leavitt’s family relocated to Tullahoma, Tennessee, where he continued to work as an EMT for the county ambulance service as well as a part-time dispatcher for the local E-911 Center dispatching law enforcement, fire, and EMS. After completing paramedic training at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Chief Leavitt accepted a full-time position with the EMS Division of the Nashville Fire Department in 1994.

After working side by side with law enforcement for many years, Chief Leavitt decided to change paths and attend the Metro Nashville Police Department Training Academy in the spring of 2001. In November of that year, he graduated and began his law enforcement career. Chief Leavitt worked as a patrol officer until 2007 when he was promoted to sergeant, leading patrol units, flexible deployment teams and briefly serving in the Internal Affairs Unit.

In 2010, he was promoted to lieutenant where he served in the patrol division as a watch commander until 2015. In 2015, the Chief of Police selected him to serve in the Custom Services Division. This division was responsible for Special Events, Secondary Employment, the SRO program, the FTO Coordinator, and the Special Investigations and Surveillance Unit.

In 2019, Chief Leavitt was promoted to Captain and continued to lead the Custom Services Division. He was responsible for all events in the city including planning and operations for the 2019 NFL Draft, the 2020 Presidential Debate, multiple presidential visits, CMA Music Festivals, and other events. During times of disaster, Chief Leavitt was responsible for unified command operations including the 2020 tornados that ravaged Nashville, the Pandemic which resulted in the shut down of local businesses, and the 2020 Christmas Day bombing in the downtown core.

Chief Leavitt holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, both from Columbia Southern University. He completed the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police in 2017, and in 2019 received the Trilogy Award for completing the three-part management series through FBI-LEEDA. Chief Leavitt has also completed advanced training in Media Relations and holds command level certification in Incident Management through FEMA.

Chief Leavitt looks forward to serving in Alliance and the opportunities a smaller city offers in the areas of community engagement and communication. His top priorities are increasing staffing, reinstating the SRO program, reinstating the K-9 program, and increasing training opportunities for our officers. Chief Leavitt’s door is always open, and he invites you to stop by if you have a question or concern.
