  • Check your toilets for leaks. Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately. Leaking toilets and faucets can waste over 3,000 gallons annually.
  • Only run your dishwasher and washing machine when they are full. Turn the water off while shaving or brushing your teeth, you can save up to 20 gallons of water. Replace shower heads with low flow heads and replace older toilets that use 5 to 7 gallons of water per flush to the new toilets that use only 1.5 gallons per flush.
  • Turn off lawn sprinklers during load condition yellow and red. All of Alliance's municipal wells are operated by electricity. To assist in reducing electrical demands and peaks, thus lowering our electricity costs.
  • Do not water your lawn during the heat of the day. Wind and sun will evaporate much of the water, therefore night time watering is much more efficient and reduces the peak demands for the electric system. This is a great way to save on both lawn watering and electrical costs.
  • Allow blue grasses to grow higher and mow at a higher setting. Blue grass will tolerate heat and drought better when grown higher. It is natural for blue grasses to stress and brown slightly during the heat of summer. Do not increase lawn watering to keep it green, as night time temperatures begin to decrease, these grasses will return to green.
  • Set sprinkler systems to operate only 15 to 25 minutes per zone, two to three times weekly. Try operating sprinkler systems manually, thus only watering when it is absolutely needed. Daily watering will significantly increase watering costs with the new rate structure and is a waste of this precious resource.
